It has been reported that we will spend billions of dollars on Complimentary and Alternative Medical Health Care this year. But, consumers are not sure where to turn for holistic healthcare or whom to believe because claims and counter claims by special interest groups regarding products and treatments have created an environment that places marketing and profit ahead of consumer benefit. Even educated, pro-active healthcare consumers must give pause and evaluate their choices.
Dr. Ziagos offers the following to assist you with making informed decisions.
Washington DC. In a recently unveiled exhibit open to the public on July 10th at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC, one of the world famous “Crystal Skulls” was placed on display. Brought to the attention of the general public, in a recent movie “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, the scientist at the Smithsonian decided it might be an opportune time to display their skull and release a documentary film “The Legend of the Crystal Skulls”. Documentation and research on this skull was done by Smithsonian archaeologist Jane MacLaren Walsh will also be published in the July edition of the Journal of Archaeological Science.
Located in several museums around the world are examples of the legendary crystal skulls that claim to be Pre-Columbian in origin. Some of the skulls have been subjected to extensive research and examination while others are on display as curiosities and relics. Several ethnic cultures have proclaimed for centuries the powers and sacred nature of these relics.
Native American legend tells of thirteen life-size crystal skulls said to contain crucial information about humankind’s true purpose and destiny. The legend prophesied that one day, at a time of great crisis for humanity, all thirteen crystal skulls would be rediscovered and brought together to reveal information vital to the very survival of the human race. To date several skulls have been discovered, however, the location of several others are still a mystery.
The scientific community has been unable in the past to decode the origin of the skulls or technology necessary to create them. Some of the skulls have have sat for more than a century in museums and in private collections for decades. With the advancement of technology such as Electron Microscopes and Lasers, scientists have begun to study these unusual and sacred objects more thoroughly.
Here are some examples of some of the more famous and extensively tested skulls. The almost identical British Crystal Skull and the Paris Crystal Skull were reported to have been purchased about the same time, in Mexico, in the late 19th century. They are on display at the British Museum of Man in London and the Trocadero Museum of Paris.
Two other similar skulls are the Mayan Crystal Skull and the Amethyst Skull. Both were reported to have been discovered in the early 1900’s and brought to the US. It has been reported that they have both been tested extensively by scientist at Hewlett Packard.
“Max” the Texas Crystal Skull regularly appears in exhibitions across the United States and is owned by the Park Family.
The most famous of these skulls is the Mitchell-Hedges Skull owned by Anna Mitchell-Hedges reported to be discovered in Lubaatun in British Honduras around 1924. This claim is refuted by the British Museum. It has been reported that Hewlett-Packard Laboratories has also done extensive testing on this skull and is often referred to as “she” because of its size. “She”, also tours regularly in exhibits.
The list of other skulls reported to exist by various ethnic and spiritual communities is extensive. There are several other skulls on display around the world and each one has its own unique and interesting origin and purpose.
In the book “Mayan Prophecies” by Adrian Gilbert and Maurice Cotterell it is suggested that the skulls may be a “fire starter” device, similar to magnifying glass that starts a fire. Centuries ago to an uneducated mind, this would surely appear to be magical in nature and command respect and fear when observed. This might explain some of the sacred power attributed to the skulls. It was also reported that the Mayans might have been privilege to technology lost in antiquity for polishing the quartz stone skull. Some scientists have reported it would have taken up to 150 years to polish a stone to the brilliance and luster it possesses without such technology.
Despite research and scientific evidence the fact that these skulls exist in form and substance unrivaled only by brilliantly cut diamond or finely crafted work of art might be enough to warrant our attention and admiration. The scientific community has raised questions regarding the origin of the skulls and what type of instruments might have been used to create them, however, the sacred nature and beliefs of these relics held by native people should be respected. Only the passage of time will confirm the purpose or intention of the skulls.
In an environment where serious scientific research and facts are the rule of thumb any object of uncertain origin and claims regarding the healing or spiritual powers of such an object will always have its skeptics. Do they have real power? Are they a device to channel energy that is beyond our ability to comprehend? Is it an object that allows us to use our own ability to heal or focus our attention? For those who believe, and for those who have benefited from its powers is it a matter of faith? You decide.

Reclaiming Your Health
Follow the Program
By Dr. Anthony G Ziagos
Good health is not something that occurs automatically without your cooperation and effort. By achieving a balance between your physical, emotional and spiritual being you can be healthier and happier. Becoming pro active in your health care is a critical component of wellness. Determining the cause and effect of “dis-ease” in a patient is complex. The patient does not always know how to explain their feelings or answer a the question, “Does it hurt?” Pain is very subjective and often difficult to measure. Finding the cause of “dis-ease” is important and essential before you can remedy the problem. Do not be afraid to ask your health care provider lots of questions. A health care professional will always answer your questions and explain your diagnosis so you can understand.
Diet, as in what you eat rather than what you don’t eat is critical to wellness. Regular exercise for a strong and healthy heart keeps you fine tuned. Positive mental attitude and positive spiritual outlook can heal the body and create the balance necessary for a healthy lifestyle. Once you understand the cause of your discomfort be sure to look at ALL the options available to determine which course of action is best for you to take to start the healing process. When you have achieved ”balance”, establish habits that will prevent re-occurrence of the problem. Good habits and your pro active involvement will help you achieve positive and lasting results. “Sometimes it takes as long to get back as it did to get there.”

Alternative & Complementary Medicine
By Dr. Anthony G. Ziagos, Sr., AMD, NMD, MBA
Try it and call me in the morning
It has been reported that we will spend 8.5 BILLION dollars on Complimentary and Alternative Medical Health Care this year. You cannot read a newspaper or listen to the evening news without being exposed to information about Naturopathy, Vitamin, Mineral, and Dietary Supplements, Traditional Therapies, Diet and Exercise, or the latest medical study done by a "leading research institute". Consumers are not sure where to turn for holistic healthcare or whom to believe. Claims and counter claims by special interest groups regarding products and treatments have created an environment that places marketing and profit ahead of the consumer's benefit. Even an educated, pro-active healthcare consumer must give pause and evaluate their choices.
There is no consensus in the United States today regarding certification, licensing, or laws governing Complimentary and Alternative Medical Practitioners. From state to state, different standards and rules apply regarding practitioners and their practices. Many of the healing art disciplines have been practiced for hundreds of years without formal associations or government interference. The knowledge and information, once held by a few practitioners, is being sought out and taught to a larger audience. Traditionally, practitioners have learned these skills by studying at alternative educational institutions, by private research and study, or a few fortunate ones have had this information passed down from one generation to another. In great demand now by the general public, most major medical institutions across the U.S. like Harvard, John Hopkins now have Alternative and Complimentary Medicine courses included in their curriculum as electives for MD's. To meet the current demand, "Holistic Healthcare Providers" and "Alternative Medical Practitioners", are offering their services. Consumers, taking a pro-active roll in their own health care, are looking for these professionals. Documented domestic and international studies have demonstrated the benefits of traditional therapies on the negative effects of poor diet, environmental contamination, poor posture, and a variety of "dis-ease" that has manifested in their bodies. Furthermore, consumers are seeking relief and comfort from headaches and body aches and other human conditions that have caused them discomfort and suffering.Every day, thousands of people find comfort and relief from Naturopaths, Herbalists, Aromatherapists, Reiki Practitioners, Massage Therapists, and other healing art practitioners.
Outside the United States, consumers have a choice of healthcare options. Since there is no consensus or agreement on a delivery system or qualification standard for practitioners, the public is denied a choice in healthcare treatment options, and natural health practitioners are denied a legitimate role in our healthcare system. We can all agree there is no substitute for Allopathic (Western) Medicine when it comes to emergency medical care. However, Allopathic care is just one alternative for preventive medicine or assessment care. Ayurvedic, Traditional Chinese Medicine (including Acupuncture), and Naturopathy are among the most sought after treatment options in other parts of the civilized world. The problem is further complicated due to insurance company and third party medical reimbursement systems that have not acknowledged the benefit of drugless remedies, preventive medicine and holistic healthcare. The consumer is still demanding alternative treatments and drugless remedies that are not readily available from allopathic physicians despite the reimbursement issue.
With regard to Naturopaths and most Alternative & Complimentary Medical Practitioners, there are four practice models that exist in the U.S. today. Registered, certified, licensed, unregulated. There are 11 States that license Naturopathic Physicians; Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Utah, Vermont, Alaska and Hawaii. Washington, D.C. registers Traditional Naturopaths. Minnesota has what is referred to as an "Unlicensed Complementary and Alternative Health Care Freedom of Access" statute. It exempts 22 different healing art practitioners and offers them the right to practice as long as they follow guidelines established by the state. According to Boyd Landry the Executive Director of the Coalition for Natural Health (CNH), a Washington, DC non-profit association prefers the unregulated model. Their goal is to see freedom of choice to access natural health options for both practitioners and consumers. CNH is opposed to the licensing laws in the 11 states, because the licensing laws greatly restrict natural health practices outside of Naturopathic Medicine. However they acknowledge the Minnesota model is least intrusive of three remaining options. Idaho has a county that licenses Naturopaths on an independent basis. CNH feels that Rhode Island will adopt a statute similar to Minnesota within the next year. Dr. Steve Arnett, MD from the Southern Graduate Institute of Natural Medical Science has indicated that Kentucky is reviewing a registration statute now. The remaining 34 states have no licensing or registration policy at this time and Boyd Landry of CNH feels they will not pass any legislation in the near future.
The majority of the country, including Massachusetts, offers both
the consumer and the practitioner the right to access and practice
Naturopathic or other Alternative and Complementary Therapies to
enhance a holistic approach to healthcare.
There are several national organizations that certify Naturopaths
and other Holistic and Alternative Healthcare Providers. Most reputable
professional organizations require, high academic standards including
continuing education, several years of practical experience in patient
care, and strict code of ethics. National certification is not a
license to practice, it is a peer review standard to promote and
insure high quality within a discipline. From a practical perspective,
certification has and should be been relied upon by the consumer
to insure accountability, professional treatment, and quality service.
Alternative and complimentary healthcare should be available to everyone. Naturopaths and other Alternative Medical Providers practicing preventive medicine and nutritional counseling can provide valuable information. There are dozens of therapies and treatments that can safely and effectively prevent and alleviate patient "dis-ease" and reduce unnecessary demands to an over burdened healthcare system as we know it today.

The Last Great Frontier
...that man faces...is the mind.
By Dr. Anthony G. Ziagos, Sr. MBA, R. Hy.
Did you know that the last great frontier that man faces is the mind? As a certified hypnotherapist I have studied the potential of the mind, yet we have only begun to see the potential and capability of this powerful and complex computer. In order to understand the hypnosis process and the hypnotic prescription I have prepared this introduction for YOU. The greater your understanding of the hypnosis process, the greater benefit you will obtain from this hypnotic prescription. Come with me, and journey into the mind.
The mind is divided into two main parts, the conscious and the subconscious. The left side, our conscious mind, allows us to perform our everyday activities, it drives our five senses of smell, taste, hearing, seeing and feeling, it allows us to think and reason. The right side, our sub conscious mind, is that part of our mind most of us seldom use. Our emotional and creative side, our desires and most important our memory. Think of an iceberg, your conscious mind is that part of the iceberg above the water. The subconscious is that vast portion below the surface, an enormous untapped resource. The potential for its use is unsettling, the possibilities endless. It can serve to explain otherwise unexplainable phenomenon. Scientific and academic research has proven the ability of the mind is enormous yet we know so little, relative to how the mind works. Hypnosis allows us to utilize this untapped source of energy and power. It gives us the ability to use it to our advantage in accomplishing anything we desire. As we begin the hypnosis process, you should be aware that there is never a question of whether you are hypnotized, or not, but to what degree have you benefited from the hypnosis process. We are all capable in some degree to benefit from the hypnosis experience. Three stages of understanding prior to hypnosis must be accomplished by you, the subject. So much has been written concerning hypnosis. In some cases the public and a potentially good subject has been either misinformed or misled regarding hypnosis. Given a total population, 20% are excellent subjects, we refer to them as natural somnambulists. 20% are extremely difficult and/or uncooperative, they are either unwilling to become hypnotized. The remaining 60% are in varying degrees suggestible, and can be placed in a hypnotic state depending on the circumstances and the ability of the hypnotist.Let's look at the three stages of understanding and how they relate to you.
- You must be informed. The hypnotic process and even the word hypnosis can be misleading. Hypnos, the Greek word for sleep is a contradiction, under hypnosis you are actually in a heighten state of awareness, fully aware of everything going on around you. You cannot be forced to do anything against your moral or spiritual beliefs while under hypnosis. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis.
- Rapport. You must believe that the hypnotist has the ability to successfully and professionally place you into a hypnotic state. Confidence in their ability to help you accomplish your goals with care and execute a prescription effectively. You should be comfortable with your hypnotist, his professional manner and approach.
- Desire. You must have desire. Your desire to be placed in a hypnotic state, your desire to accomplish your goals, your desire to achieve a deep and meaningful hypnotic state that will allow you to use the power of your subconscious mind. You can benefit from these three basic levels of understanding, and make important changes in your life. By using the untapped resources of the sub conscious mind, you can increase your understanding of the hypnosis process. You can use your mind more efficiently and effectively to improve your psychological and physiological self. You can achieve benefits for yourself and improve your relationship with others.

Introduction to Reiki
By Dr. Anthony G. Ziagos, Sr., AMD, NMD, MBA
Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is the Japanese word for the Universal Life Force. It is a healing energy that surrounds us, binds us and sustains our entire world. Since civilized man has recorded their existence, every culture has referred to this “Universal Life Force” and has its own name for it. Religious leaders, to explain the mystery of faith have also used this energy. In India it was referred to as Prana. The Native Americans have referred to it as Orenda. The Chinese word for this energy, Chi, is now part of our everyday language. Many civilizations have used this binding energy for centuries, as part of their cultural disciplines in a variety of ways, for example Tai Chi, Acupuncture, and Yoga.
There is an infinite source of this energy that can be channeled not only for our benefit, but to create harmony in support of the animals, plants, and much more that is invisible to us. The Reiki healing discipline has been used traditionally throughout Japan and India for over 100 years. It was Dr. Mikao Usui in the mid-nineteenth century that rediscovered this almost-lost healing system. Your understanding and belief in the Reiki process will benefit you if you desire the benefit. Reiki must be asked for and accepted. Like hypnosis and other traditional therapies that heal the greater your desire the greater the benefit.
Reiki is a completely natural healing discipline. Reiki works on four levels, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. It has been reported by many it accelerates the healing process of the body, reduces stress, and helps to keep you in harmony with the Creator. Through practice of the Reiki healing discipline yourself, and sharing it with others, a sense of balance, purpose and spirituality can be naturally restored. After a healer has been attuned (explained later) to Reiki, energy will naturally begin to flow as soon as they place their hands on anyone or anything.
Unlike other spiritual and physical (hands on) healing methods, Reiki has its own inherent intelligence, it does not involve effort from the healer in sending or directing energy. This intelligence guides Reiki to the areas that need its healing energy automatically, thereby maximizing the needs of the patient efficiently. During the healing sessions you will be placing your hands on the patient according to traditional methods, but you will not actually be directing the energy to areas within the body. Reiki energy directs itself to the part of the body that has the greatest need. It flows completely automatically and always with positive and beneficial effects.
It impacts and effects all four levels of the patient. Symptoms and physical “dis-ease” may manifest itself in the body but a problem may be deeply rooted in spiritual or mental “baggage”. This deficiency is commonly referred to as mind/body connection.
For example, the symptom may be a headache, but the cause may be stress from a current situation in life. In this case, Reiki would not only help the receiver to release the pain and tension, but also it would help them recognize ways of resolving the stressful situation.
During a healing session, both you and the patient may feel a variety of sensations, heat, cold, vibration, tingling, etc. Sometimes the therapist and the patient experience opposites, for example, the therapist may experience feelings of heat while the patient experiences cold. Other times there will be no experiences at all. One of the amazing and beautiful gifts of Reiki is you can always be sure that the healing session has been very beneficial to the patient. An attuned healer channels Reiki energy whether or not any sensations are experienced during the healing session. The benefit may be in direct proportion to your desire and belief. Your faith will contribute to the benefit you receive.
Reiki is channeled easily through absolutely anything, so it is unnecessary to remove any clothing during the healing session. This can also be useful when energy is needed to pass through plaster casts, and any other obstacles. It is also possible for Reiki to be effective by channeling Reiki energy from a distance.
The patient does not have to be in “dis-ease” to benefit from Reiki energy. The benefits of regular Reiki energy treatments are many. It can contribute to your overall health and well being. Reiki energy will help you achieve balance and harmony at all four levels of your being. It can improve the quality of life for you and those that you love.
The patient and the healer both benefit from Reiki energy during a healing session. The more Reiki you share the more in harmony you will become with nature. Remember also, Reiki can also benefit plants and animals. The greatest success will occur just by allowing it to work by itself. Always remain relaxed and detached from the process. If you start concentrating on sending or directing energy, it will reduce the optimal flow.

Acupressure
By Dr. Anthony G. Ziagos, Sr., AMD, NMD, MBA
The organs of the body are interconnected in a delicate balance of energy. The ancient and modern Asian Community refers to this as the “CHI”. This concept founded in Ancient Chinese Medicine is still in practice today. The meridians of the body, which form a continuous inter connected system, are the connective channels for the “CHI” or energy of the living body. The “CHI” needs to flow unobstructed to maintain a healthy body and a clear mind, the balance of health. Any partial blockage or interruption of the “CHI”, by internal or external forces, will cause discomfort and illness or “dis-ease”. The Acupressure Therapist by treating specific pressure points along the meridian system can re balance the “CHI” your body energy and provide relief for the patient.
The practice of Neuromuscular Acupressure treats the muscles in much the same way. By using fingers, the thumb, and hand by applying pressure to specific points along the meridians the therapist can give relief and balance the body.
Observation, questioning, listening, and monitoring the vital signs is critical in determining the best way to approach the treatment process. By utilizing these techniques in addition to the pressure point therapy, a skilled Acupressure Therapist can evaluate and treat the needs of the patient.

Less Stress
Notes: Dec. 18, 1997 Edition
By Dr. Anthony G. Ziagos, Sr. MBA, R. Hy.
Rush, Rush, Rush! Everyone is running around attempting to be in two places at once. Their days are filled with anxiety. Tension builds and either the dog ends up being kicked or an unsuspecting spouse is victim of verbal abuse, or worse.
Holidays are filled with high expectations placed on us by the media, our family, and “what’s expected of us,” or, a combination of all three. A Christian religious holiday has been transformed into a commercial extravaganza, an excuse for days off, and an expectation that everyone else should be “generous” towards us. Of course, we seem to get sucked into the expectation that everyone demands, and before we know it -- we are attempting to cope with a financial and psychological burden of the season. Tension builds and our bodies begin to rebel, and mental pain turns into physical pain. Ooouuuccchhh!!! Our shoulders become hard and tense, our lower back never seems to stop aching, and our eyes can’t seem to focus. We go to bed tired and wake up tired. Why? Everyone wants to know. Simple, it’s stress.Stress causes anxiety or anxious feelings, the anxiety causes tension. The more in-tense the stress, the more pronounced the anxiety, which then builds up to cause real physical problems. Stress manifests itself in several forms. Muscle aches and headaches are the most common. Extreme forms may show up as stomach ailments or bowel problems. When things are really out of control, we see a doctor. He assigns a name to it, and we begin to feel better. Or do we? The pharmaceutical industry has several solutions for us. The more exotic the malady, the more expensive the “medicine” can warrant. What if? ... Our suffering is real because the doctor said, “I had something” and the prescribed medicine is making me feel better so I must have “it”. Uh huh! We know what comes next. “You live my life, and you’ll see.” Sounds familiar?
What if? Maybe there are people who do understand. Maybe there are people who really do know what’s wrong. Maybe there are people who understand and know about stress, and make it their business not to have any. Stress and related problems can be controlled. Stress happens to everyone, and the difference is the way we choose to deal with it. If we take control of our lives by addressing the little things that happen on a daily basis, we are less likely to have tension and the problems associated with chronic stress. Communication is the key to a healthier life. Taking control by expressing our concerns will help reduce stress and subsequent anxiety and tension. This does not give us the right to be obnoxious or pushy if we address our concerns with communication.

Healing with Magnets
By Anthony G. Ziagos, MBA, CMCH, R.Hy. Certified Diplomate, American Psychotherapy Association
Today, many people believe that certain places on Earth, such as Lourdes, France, and Sedona, Arizona, owe their healing powers to high level of Bio-magnetic energy. The Chinese have referred to this energy as “Chi”, the Japanese as “Ki” and even the Native Americans referred to it as “Orenda”. Reiki Practitioners refer to the healing powers of the Universal Life Force to describe this energy field. Clinical studies and personal evidence suggests that people experience a beneficial effect of exposure to magnetic energy. Hundreds of studies are available worldwide on fixed and pulsed magnetic therapy. Evidence shows that it stimulates and enhances the body’s natural healing process. Studies suggest that Electro-Magnetic Energy is even more beneficial than stationary magnets. The father of modern medicine and Greek Philosopher Hippocrates wrote several thousand years ago, “The natural force within each of us is the greatest healer of all.”
Electrical activity in the body is essential. Our bodies need the energy provided by free electrons. We usually get them from food, water, air we breath. These “free” electrons, [Chi, Ki, Orenda, Universal Life Force] are the catalyst, the life force that burns oxygen in the cells. It is believed that magnetic energy field and Bio-magnetic energy levels in the body determine its resistance to “dis-ease” (disease) and aging. The body behaves like a battery. It can be charged and discharged and even drained of energy. Most “dis-ease” (disease), from the common cold to cancer can manifest itself in a run down body, one that is weak and low in energy. The food, water and air that we consume everyday unfortunately may not have the levels of electrons necessary for us to maintain a health and fully charged body.North or South?
Two major conventions have emerged in modern field of fixed magnetic therapy Unipolar and Bipolar. One of the earliest studies done by Davis & Rawls in the 1930s suggests that exposure to Bio-magnetic negative poles (North) enhance health while Bio-magnetic positive poles (South) exacerbate disease. Dr. Beryl Payne, and Dr. John Zimmerman both leaders in the field of bio-magnetic energy suggest that unipolar approach to healing (north or south polarity) is most effective depending on the situation.
Dr. William Pawluk advocates bipolar consensus. Exposure to both fields simultaneously. He further suggests that the change in the north south field, referred to as the gradient, is what actually produces the healing effect on the subject.
Strong supporting data exists for both approaches. The issue may become delivery at the point of need, in a usable form, a magnetic field of appropriate direction and strength to heal.
Controversy is bound to arise in an emerging field. Differing opinions with regard to use of a positive (south) or negative (north) pole on the magnets. Each theory provides enough positive clinical results to show that magnet therapy works.
Hundreds of studies are available worldwide on fixed and pulsed magnetic therapy. - Hippocrates
Size, Strength & Placement
There is agreement among experts regarding several aspects of bio-magnetic therapy. Strong evidence suggests that pulsed electro-magnetic energy is more effective than a fixed field. You should use a magnet that is larger than the affected area that you are treating. If a large magnet is not available ,then several smaller ones should be placed close together to help prevent pole “bleed through”.
Magnetic field is measured in units called teslas, or gauss (1 tesla = 10,000 gauss). The stronger the magnetic field or gauss strength the deeper the field will penetrate and the greater the benefit. Some experts measure the core strength of the magnet others the surface strength. One leading authority suggests that the true measure is the gauss per gram weight that determines its strength.
Suppose that 1000 gauss is needed to effectively treat a specific muscle or area of the body, you may need 8,000 gauss on the surface of the magnet to penetrate the skin surface into the body.
Neodymium or ceramic magnets tend to be more powerful than plastalloy type. When using Unipolar magnets, several can be used. They can be stacked to vary gauss strength. When used for healing purposes, the strength should be between 1,000 and 5,000 gauss.
It is suggested that bio-magnetic therapy can be used by itself as an effective therapy. However, when used in conjunction with other healing therapies, such as Acupressure, Reiki, Acupuncture, Massage Therapy, and Aromatherapy, to name a few, it becomes more effective.
Caution should be exercised when using any type of therapy. This material is not intended as a substitute for medical care. You should seek the advice of a competent physician for diagnosis or prescription of a particular ailment. Some people may experience reaction to increased energy levels. You should exercise caution if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker or are under doctor care for cancer or chronic ailment. Excellent results have been reported for several conditions. Clinical experience suggests that treatment of osteo arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibro-myalgia, migraines and Parkinson’s Disease with fixed magnets can help to relieve pain, improve circulation, reduce inflammation, reduce the forming of scar tissue, reduce stress, accelerate healing, and enhance energy levels in the body.
This material is not intended as medical advice. You should seek the advice of a qualified physician. We are not intending to diagnose or prescribe any specific treatment.

HTMA Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis
By Dr. Anthony G. Ziagos, Sr., AMD, NMD, MBA
“A hair sample when properly obtained, analyzed and interpreted, can provide information about one’s metabolic and nutritional status. This includes the effects of diet, nutritional supplementation, stress, toxic metal exposure, and even inherited mineral patterns. Through clinical results and continuing research, HTMA is gaining wide reputation internationally.”
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is an excellent evaluation tool when used in conjunction with other tests by naturopaths, nutritionists, physicians, and other health care professionals. It has been used widely in many countries offering one of the most readily accessible tissues to examine, and given the vast amount of information HTMA can yield, it is one of the most economical nutritional tests available today. There are some in the medical profession who do not feel the results are conclusive, consistent or scientifically valid. Articles have appeared in national publications and medical journals claiming results obtained from HTMA are not reliable. I would suggest that if these tests show any type of trend or even an indication of a potential problem they would be of great value to the patient and a practitioner. It offers a window of opportunity to look deeper into a potential problem or imbalance.
For consistent uncontaminated results, the hair sample should be taken in a clinical setting. There are also many choices available across the country to process samples. I recommend a Federally licensed laboratory and then have the results reviewed by your professional healthcare provider. A Naturopath who is Board Certified as a Holistic Healthcare Professional is familiar with these tests and can provide excellent information regarding their use.
According to Trace Elements Inc. of Addison Texas, over thirty minerals and heavy metals are routinely tested for including during HTMA. They include Calcium, Zinc, Selenium, Silicon, Silver, Strontium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Boron, Sulfur, Lithium, Tin, Sodium, Iron, Cobalt, Vanadium, Nickel, Titanium, Potassium, Manganese, Germanium, Antimony, Platinum, Tungsten, Copper, and heavy metals Arsenic, Aluminum, Beryllium, Mercury, Cadmium, and Lead.
Once the results are returned and evaluated you should discuss treatment options available if any contrary indications appear. Diet and exercise, herbs and vitamins have been used successfully in treating imbalances in body chemistry. Your immune system may need a boost or an internal organ may be weak. Follow a complete protocol recommended by your healthcare provider. Many patients want a quick fix to a problem that has developed over months or years. Herbs, vitamins and minerals need time to reverse the effects that have caused the dis-ease. A good patient will allow sufficient time for the body to adjust and heal itself. A complete protocol should be followed in order to obtain a complete result.

Perfect Fit for Naturopathy!
Custom Orthotics
By Dr. Anthony G. Ziagos, Sr., AMD, NMD, MBA
Naturopathy is a distinctive system of non-invasive health practice in which neither surgery or drugs are used. The Naturopath, through assessment, education, and counseling can recommend natural occurring substances. To help stabilize and maintain the body’s intrinsic self-healing process for natural health custom orthotics may help.
Your feet are the foundation of your body. When you walk, stand or run your feet support your body. They protect your soft tissues, bones and spine from damaging shock and stress as you move. Your feet help you get from one place to another and perform best when all of the components (bones, muscles, arches, tendons, and skin surface) are in top condition. Any weakness or unstable condition in the feet can contribute to postural problems in the rest of the body. If the pedal (foot) foundation is out of balance, your entire structure is under stress. This stress can lead to distortion that affects your over all health. Bones and joints are more susceptible to degeneration. Postural stress and unbalanced muscles drain your energy and strength. Misfired nerve endings of you Autonomic Nervous System could reduce the effectiveness of your immune system. Structural imbalances create biomechanical stress throughout the entire kinetic chain.. Spinal Pelvic Stabilizers (Custom Orthotics) can keep the feet in a stable and balanced position. Custom orthotics are used to correct, support, align and prevent dysfunction or improve function of movable body parts.
The Five red flags of spinal instability are; foot flair, excessive shoe wear, low medial arches, bowed Achilles tendons and internal knee rotation. These common conditions associated with biomechanical stress and foot misalignment (pronation) are low back pain, shin splints, hip pain, sciatica, scoliosis, knee pain, and foot problems. Only a qualified physician can diagnose the cause of specific conditions and rule out any serious health problems. This is not meant as a substitute for medical advise or treatment.
Custom
Orthotics are however proven to create a more symmetrical pedal (foot))
alignment which reduces biomechanical stress.
Naturopaths and other certified health care professionals can provide a valuable service to their patient. By observation you can assess a preliminary need, make a weight bearing cast of your patients feet for custom orthotics, and if necessary refer them to a specialist or to a Chiropractor for an adjustment to reduce or eliminate re-occurring subluxations. Your feet and your posture are as unique and individual as you are. Since no two people are alike, customized weight bearing foot castings can help produce an orthotic made especially for your patient and their specific needs. If your feet are contributing to a postural problem in another part of the body, a chiropractor may need to adjust or correct an imbalance. Custom made orthotics can help the adjustments “hold” better. Mass produced orthotics cannot offer the same custom support an individual may require to keep their feet in the proper structural position. Your patient will not benefit from the experience or knowledge of the Naturopath when purchasing mass market or on the shelf orthotics.
If custom orthotics are recommended a “weight bearing” cast should be taken and sent to a quality laboratory where stabilizers (custom orthotics) are created to correct any imbalance found in your casting. 16 different measurements and careful dimensions are taken, from the weight bearing cast, to insure maximum stability and effectiveness. Custom Orthotics best suited for them are based on a variety of factors including; age, weight, height, sex, lifestyle, and potential posture problems. Education and lifestyle changes are essential to correct and improve postural stress and strain. As a Naturopath you can provide valuable service for your patient by recommending they consider custom orthotics. Their decision to invest in custom orthotics may be an opportunity to help them restore balance to their body and reduce biomechanical stress.

Water . . . Life’s Necessity
By Dr. Anthony G. Ziagos, Sr., AMD, NMD, MBA
Water is one of the two key necessities to sustain life. Oxygen is the other. You can survive weeks without food but only days without water. Water comprises about three-quarters of our body and without enough water we cannot maintain our health. Most of us take water for granted and do not realize the preventive and beneficial benefits of this necessary fluid.
Every cell in our body requires water to perform and maintain their essential function. Water lubricates the body, acts as a shock absorber for joints, bones and muscles, flushes out toxins and waste products we produce. Water decreases sodium retention and improves gland and hormone function. It helps the liver break down and releases more fat, reducing hunger. It hydrates the skin, regulates our body temperature and helps vitamins, minerals, proteins, sugars and hormones to move along our internal waterway system. Every body function and internal system is regulated and dependent on water. Proteins and enzymes that heal the body are dependent on enough water to operate efficiently. The flow of energy depends on adequate supply of water. The removal of toxins and internal waste products will increase the efficiency of your immune system to prevent disease and maintain healthy balance within. It cleanses internal organs. Your brain tissue is 85% water. Messages to and from your brain to everywhere else in your body are also transported on our internal waterway. Your daily energy depends on water, because your body’s chemical reactions are water dependent. Drinking plenty of water every day keeps our body and mind at maximum efficiency.Water also helps eliminate toxins from the bloodstream. Your blood is 85% water. “Even minor dehydration thickens it, reducing circulation from the optimal level and as a result impairing the blood’s ability to deliver food and oxygen to every body system and carry away wastes” says Dr. Robert Cooper. Once an illness develops, your body’s cells tissues and internal waterway may become weaken and under nourished comprising their ability to fend off disease. Over time, chronic dehydration may hinder the immune system and the ability of the blood to deliver white blood cells and other valuable nutrients. To avoid dehydration one needs to drink lots of water and other fluids.
Everyone’s water requirements vary. Most professionals who advocate bio nutrition and practice naturopathic principals recommend six to eight glasses a day. Our daily water intake from food is about 3 ½ cups and about ½ cup as a byproduct of metabolism. Our daily loss is about six cups through elimination, two cups through routine perspiration and another two cups through breathing. Rigorous exercise causes additional losses. “Even without exercising, which is necessary for good health, the average American is looking at a six cup a day water deficit.” Dr. Cooper says, “and moderate exercise can sweat off another cup or two.” Traditional Therapist generally recommends six to eight glasses a day. As you can see, we could use considerably more water than we are drinking now.
Fluids should be replaced before you are thirsty. By the time you feel thirst you have already begun to dehydrate. A thirst reaction indicates the process of dehydration is already in process. You could have already depleted a quart of water, or more, from your system before you are aware of thirst and it shuts down before your need is filled. Don’t guzzle all at once it is better to drink throughout the day, a cup at a time sipping when possible. Beverages such as coffee, soda, and some teas act like a diuretic, increasing urine production exacerbating the problem. Diet also affects fluid needs. Fresh fruits and vegetables are largely water. Foods high in proteins, meat, eggs and cheeses, increase blood levels of ketones and are dehydrating. In addition, pay attention to your urination schedule. If you are not urinating several times a day you are not drinking enough.
Unfortunately, most of our tap water today is chlorinated, fluoridated, and treated to the point where it can be an irritating fluid instead of a valuable benefit. Local water supply officials are responsible for maintaining water quality. Unfortunately many of them depend on standards established by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) or rate payer mandates. Fluoridation for example may not be as beneficial as once thought. One source has commented, “Fluoridated water increases absorption of aluminum from deodorants, pots and pans, etc. by 600%.” Regarding minimum EPA standards, are they good enough? Another source has commented that, “during the last 25 years water standards have gone down the drain.” Author Mary E. Joyce, an environmental specialist, has concluded that water supplies have been contaminated to the point of raising serious questions about how water supplies have contributed to many auto immune diseases such as ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and MS. Bottled or carbonated water is the best way to replace lost body fluid. Second best are unsweetened fruit juices diluted with water or seltzer, and vegetable juices. Alcohol and caffeine-containing drinks are counterproductive in replacing water loss because of their diuretic activity. Drinks loaded with dissolved sugars or milk INCREASE water needs instead of satisfying them. You have to pay conscious attention to getting enough water every day.
Water has been used in healing process for thousands of years. Hydrotherapy is the therapeutic use of water, steam and ice. In its various forms, water, has been used by therapists to treat a wide range of illness and physical injury. Water is considered by many to be life’s spirit. Water is an important part of any holistic health regiment. It is Life’s Necessity.

Traditional Therapies for Cold & Flu Season
By Dr. Anthony G. Ziagos, Sr., AMD, NMD, MBA
It is distressing to read in most media outlets the political spin applied to lack of flu vaccines in America. Prior to the last decade I can’t remember anyone worrying about or discussing flu shots. In my opinion, a balanced diet, vitamins and minerals, regular exercise and good overall health may be the best remedy in preventing flu symptoms. It appears that drug companies and the large pharmaceutical lobby has convinced everyone from elected officials to the public at large there is a desperate need for flu vaccines. Most MD’s will advise high-risk individuals to get flu shots; and if you are concerned, it may not be a bad idea. No one seems to be advising the public about the benefits of prevention except natural medicine practitioners. We can debate the merits of flu vaccine, but even the experts do not agree on the effectiveness of the shots. Serious questions remain unanswered regarding which strains they will and will not prevent, length and severity of the flu and how preventative measures compare in alleviating or eliminating flu symptoms. It is not our intent to dispense medical advice or treatment protocols, however, there are alternatives to safeguard against down time during the cold and flu season. The primary issue that most people do not understand is getting the flu is not the issue. In all likelihood, many of us will contract some strain of the flu virus in varying degrees. The severity and length of debilitating symptoms are the real problems. Building up your immune system and treating the symptoms early will determine how severely we are afflicted.
Herbalists for over a century have used Echinacea, Andrographis, Goldenseal, and Bilberry for prevention of colds and flu symptoms. World authority Dr. Linus Pawling spent his life researching Vitamin C and its benefits. Several natural medicine practitioners and alternative health care professionals advocate several grams of Vitamin C a day. Aromatherapists have used inhalation bowls of Eucalyptus and lemon to relieve congestion. Peppermint oil has properties that give energy and sinus relief. Dr. Richard Simmons advised sixty years ago, that his research indicated flu was contracted in the ear canal. A few drops of Hydrogen Peroxide and Alcohol in each ear would reduce or eliminate flu symptoms.
Avoid stress, exercise, eat a well balanced diet, take vitamins and minerals to boost your immune system before you feel flu symptoms and seek professional help if you become infected. The best antidote against the Influenza virus is education and prevention.

Therapist Advises:
“Hugs can be contagious,
epidemic may break out.”
Lowell, MA. Local therapist advises hugs can be contagious. Hug therapy is probably one of the most effective and least applied therapies in practice today. It is a well-documented fact that hugs can increase the hemoglobin (red blood cells) in your body. An increase in red blood cells is beneficial in fighting disease and stress related illness. Couples and friends can practice this therapy most anywhere or in the privacy of their own home. If you prefer, you can also seek professional and skilled treatment.
Many critics have suggested that hugs are inappropriate in some settings and one could misinterpret this form of therapy. Many critics have also not found or offered a solution to the isolation many people feel due to shyness, loss of a loved one or loneliness due to a number of circumstances beyond their control. We feel with a real effort on everyone’s part an epidemic may break out and it could spread rapidly among the general population.
